Cities of the Plain

Description

Volume Three of the Border Trilogy In Cities of the Plain, two men marked by the boyhood adventures of All the Pretty Horses and The Crossing now stand together, between their vivid pasts and uncertain futures, to confront a country changing beyond recognition. In the fall of 1952, John Grady Cole and Billy Parham are cowboys on a New Mexico ranch encroached upon from the north by the military. On the southern horizon are the mountains of Mexico, where one of the men is drawn again and again, in this story of friendships and passion, to a love as dangerous as it is inevitable. In a lovely and terrible landscape of natural beauty and impending loss we find John Grady; a young cowboy of the old school, trusted by men and horses, and a fragile young woman, whose salvation becomes his obsession ...McCarthy makes the sweeping plains a miracle' Scotsman Like the Western settings he captures to perfection, his work is both heart-wrenchingly beautiful and uncompromisingly brutal' Express

The year is 1832 and the Cape is rife with rumours about the liberation of slaves. Philida is the mother of four children by Francois Brink, the son of her master. Unwilling to accept this fate, Philida tests the limits of her freedom by setting off on a journey. She travels across the great wilderness to the far north of Cape Town - determined to survive and be free. This title is longlisted for The Man Booker Prize 2012. More than any other book in the Old Testament, Isaiah reveals the depth of God's character, the depth of the Gospel and the depth of God's great plan for world history. Isaiah wants us to know that God is holier than we think (Isaiah 1-12), and to warn us that God is sterner than we think (Isaiah 13-35). And yet, he also wants to reassure us that God is stronger than we think (Isaiah 40-55), and to call us to action because God is closer than we think (Isaiah 56-66). Isaiah wants his prophecies to kill off our small-minded ideas about God: He wants to open our eyes to the Holy One of Israel; to stretch our minds and blow our senses with the reality of God. Isaiah has good news: God is far bigger than we think.
